Training myself to Adult

It's been nearly 6 months since I moved into my own home alone at first I thought it was probably the start of a very bad path because hell, apart from being at university I'd never really lived alone. Since going off to uni I always had house mates and then moved in with my last partner...you can guess what happened next.

It took me a very long time to adjust to single life but now I feel so comfortable with myself and it's the best feeling waking up and just being able to follow my own routine that doesn't include another. Sounds selfish but for the first time I'm putting my self first and I think it's allowed me to really grow as a person! I've picked up little things here and there to make my life so much easier, so I wanted to put together a post to almost show this stepping stone in my life.

I really needed this, I've learnt things and stepped up to being the woman I want to be and hopefully these little tips or tricks maybe that I've picked up can help you in some way!


Reduce the amount of technology on a night

It was getting to a point in my life where I was working in an office on a computer 8 hours a day and then coming home to not only be on my phone, but laptop AND watching television up until midnight. I think it wasn't an encouraging lifestyle to switch myself off from work mode, so I've been putting down the laptop half way through my night and having a 'shutting off' period towards the end of my night. I'll cuddle up and just watch tv, put down my phone and then even some nights read before bed! It means I can sleep better and I have noticed how less stressed I feel be away from a blaring screen. 



Don't over run myself on a weekday 

I have my hands in a lot of project pots, but I've found that separating that time from my full time job has helped me not feel so busy. On a week day I work 8 hours and spend two hours traveling, so when I get home at 6pm from being up at 6am I just don't feel like sinking my teeth into a lot. I've figured out that if I plan my week based around on what I need to do at the weekend I can get a lot more done, rather than producing tired content because I'm dying to jump straight into bed after work! Yeah it means a lot of plans have been turned down on the weekend because I have a bunch of work to do, but with prioritizing and better planning I have more time than ever for everything. Put yourself and your mental state first. 

Self care & house care on the weekdays

Instead of pushing my 'work' onto myself, in the week I've decided to take up tasks that are small but also can be casually done through out the night to wind down. I'll probably never sound more than an adult then when I say I have a night where I just sort out my washing and ironing it...which I look forward to. I have a cup of tea, a program on the television and then I sit down and iron. I love it! It's small tasks like this that let me switch off when I need to especially after work. Cleaning my home really makes me feel calmer and being in that clean environment is one less thing for me to worry about on the weekend when it is work time.

Meal prep & planning

This is one huge trick that not only has allowed me to save lots of money but also it gives me one less thing to worry about. I start my month by putting together a list of what meals I want to cook and how many portions I can get out of that, then I head to Aldi and do a big monthly shop! The freezer is your best friend, I prep all my meals for the week a head and freeze them! I'm wasting less food and it also means I don't run out of food. I won't lie, it's also super fun planning new meals and throwing in what I love to eat into a huge month plan!


Motivating myself to feeling better with exercise 

I'm happy that its finally summer because it means I'm more encouraged to head outside and get the fresh air we all need! One thing I've wanted to get into for a while is going to the gym, but whilst I'm trying to save money I've been looking more into what I can do from the comforts of my own home. YouTube is a life saver with little mini work outs and even yoga! I actually got into running and the nice thing about it is no I can work around my own routine as to when and how I run. I started small and now I can actually run far!

Looking after another life being 

I've had pets before but I've never had a pet alone and I think having Fang in my life has really grow me further as a person! I have to look after another being which has made me step up my responsibility. I come home early, I budget him into my wage and I also keep things nice and tidy so he doesn't have any bad things to chew or hurt myself on. Don't dive straight into getting a pet without thinking and planning for a very long time about it! But I love having a little kitten for company, just having something to look after has taken my mind off the worse things going on in my life over this 6 month period.


I've impressed myself with the progress I've made and I'm excited to make realistic goals that I now know I can achieve. I want to read more, I want to atleast read a book a week and filter in that chill down time more often. It's been so long that I've sat in the day time and just read, my mind races with all the things I could be doing but I really think that switching off from work time will do me some good. 
Home wise I really want to hang more art around the place, upstairs especially is my new focus! I've had a selection of prints up in the living room without frames and finally one of my goals for this summer is to get them all framed and put in an order. Some exciting news, I'm actually getting a house mate! One of my best friends is moving into the second room within the month and I can't wait. 

Another goal I want to set myself is to do something with my garden! I have a paved long back garden and currently it just houses my bins and two deck chairs. There are strips of plants running down each side but it needs desperately looking at. I really want to weed the entire thing and plant some flowers or even sun flowers! I know I'll probably need to do it in a couple more seasons, but it's a long term goal that I can start now by trimming it all.

  1. Being an adult sucks sometimes! I myself feel like I need to train myself haha. I'm happy you're making the steps to make yourself more of an adult, although you're already an adult.
    I'm excited to see who you're new roommate is going to be (i think i have an idea.. but idk)

  3. Congratulations on the move and adulting! Adulting is such a challenge. Even though I haven't moved out from the house because it's not totally a culture here in the Philippines to moved out unless you're working in a different place, getting married or whatever. Anyway, I can totally relate with you. I stare on my desktop for 8 hours and to get myself out from it is to have less usage of gadgets when I'm already out of the office and at home. Although, I haven't committed myself to no gadgets by the time I arrive home because I catch up with TV series. I totally miss reading an actual book and I hope maybe later or this week, I'll be able to.

    I prioritize exercising after work. After my work out, I'd do yoga poses for better sleep and it's so nice and rewarding after all the work I've done in the office. I also eat a lot of healthy food. So far, I haven't eaten any junk food for a very long time now. Through these healthy habits, it helped me a lot in adulting.

    I also have a cat. His name is Inku. He always has a monthly budget from my salary. Haha!
