BirchBox June Beauty Review

22 Jul 2020

When I was twenty I went through this phase of really loving beauty subscription boxes! I’d test out different products purely from the joy of loving makeup, which lead to me reviewing things on my blog and YouTube channel. I started to have staple products which I just stuck to, so the boxes stopped and I had a fixed makeup bag.
Just lately I’ve felt the urge to explore a little with products I use again, more skincare related as these days I go bare face a lot! With working from home (as well as the effects of lockdown) I just haven’t felt the need to put on makeup, and my skins felt amazing. I don’t know if it’s with being pregnant, but my skin is the best it’s been in a long time.

Anyway! I’d been seeing Birchbox for years and maybe out of lockdown boredom, I signed up and waited for my first box in May. I loved it! It did take it’s time with the pandemic halting shipments, but I’m stuck in my home, I’m in no rush for skincare. I liked how there was a mixture of both makeup and other skin care items, and I used them all repeatedly. Now we’re in July I thought I’d let you guys see what I got in the June box - a USA themed package.

I really liked how Birchbox acknowledged what was going on in the world, encouraging donations to Black lives matter causes and listing charities they were giving money to in support. The packaging is always super beautiful; the blue, red and gold star engraved box making it so fun to open! Here is what was in my subscription box:

Real Chemistry Fresh Start Foaming Cleanser. RRP £48

One thing I don’t currently have in my skincare routine is a cleanser - so I was incredibly excited to try this, hoping it will be good to add to my regime. After taking off my makeup I applied a little to my damp face. A little goes a long way! My face was instantly foamy, feeling really soft and clean. Forgive me but I am a little clueless when it comes to certain skincare products, but I’m assuming a cleanser, well, cleans the bits you miss on your skin. Removing it with warm water I did feel an instant change to my face. It left my skin super soft, clean, but slightly tight. I popped on my moisturiser afterwards and went to bed feeling very fresh in the face! I think this would be a good product to use in the morning to let your face feel perked up!

Patchology - FlashPatch Rejuvenating Eye Gel Patches. RRP £14

So I’ve never used eye patches before, but it’s been something I wanted to try for a long time! I put up a poll on Instagram to ask regular patch users when I should use them - a lot of people said night time, whilst others said in the morning to freshen yourself up after a bad sleep. Your skin rehydrates in your sleep, but after waking up one morning having barely slept I decided to give them a try!
The patches are so cooling on your face. They smell really fresh and feel light, sitting on my face without budging for the couple of minutes (or half an hour) I had them on! I would definitely repurchase again if I come across them in the shops, my eyes instantly felt less puffy, dry and left my skin feeling super soft to start my day at least looking less a mess than I felt.

Magnitone WipeOut! Eco-Friendly Microfibres Cleansing Cloth. RRP £20

This was the product in the subscription I was most intrigued about! A lot of people will scold me for this, but I just remove my makeup with baby wipes and it is the bane of my life. With this cloth all you need to do is wet it with warm water and hey presto your makeup is removed! I honestly can’t believe it. It felt like I was taking my makeup off with the sofa’s fluffy blanket, but it removed every last bit of makeup on my face. The 100% bamboo microfibres swell up when wet, grabbing hold of the particles in your makeup - leaving your skin smear free as you use it.
I do think it leaves the cloth looking an absolute mess after one use, but the cloth is washable and reusable for up to 1000 washes. I actually just gave it a quick scrub with body wash when I was in the shower and it came straight out!

Winky Lux Peeper Perfect Concealer in Light Beige. RRP £14

This full coverage concealer diffuses the look of uneven skin tones and blemishes. It contains collagen, hyaluronic acid, grape seed extract, olive oil and vitamin E to help tired, dry eyes!
Honestly the concealer isn’t my colour - it’s a little too dark and I found I had to then apply more foundation over the top to even it out. I did think it was very full coverage - a little goes a long way and that’s what every girl wants in a concealer. It did feel silky and easy to blend.

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle. RRP £21.50

With the damage I have put my hair under throughout the years, I really do appreciate a good hair product. This detangler seals cuticles to smooth, moisturise and de-frizz. I rarely blow dry my hair, but to test it out I applied the product to damp hair, brushed it through and styled as usual. I loved it! The product smells fantastic, and left my hair less frizzy and felt so smooth. I tend to get knots a lot with having curly hair, but for days after it still felt smooth and untangled. I also had less fly away! Always a plus.

Over all, I loved all the products I got in June! I’ve been frequently using them and items like the Eco Microfibre makeup remover cloth has become part of my routine. The cleansers too is doing wonders for my skin!

I’ve already received my July box so I will be doing another review soon! Let me know if you’ve used any of these products and what you thought.
Until next time, J x
