My Netflix & Chill Films This Valentines

12 Feb 2017

Hello everybody! With my birthday only being a couple of days before Valentines day, I feel as if I unintentionally get involved each year because everything in February seems to gravitate towards the season. Films on tv, activity to do with my partner, products in store and even clothes, Valentines is everywhere whether you hate it or not and I kind of love it. I love seeing the red hearts, roses everywhere, sweet candles and most importantly the lush products (I bought a huge bottle of Prince Charming this afternoon) and I definitely indulge. Don't get me wrong, I never do anything to celebrate Valentines, Joel & I don't even get cards, put personally I don't mind a cheeky rom com with some bubbly that was half price in Asda! Whether you go on Netflix or the Sky movie section there's so many films perfect for the season, even if you're not particularly into romance, there's a number of options I love that have enough of other tones to the film to take away the soppiness! Everyone enjoys a little Netflix & chill time, and here are my favourite picks to get into the Valentines mood this year!

Image result for heathers

Kicking it off with one of my favourites which never gets old, is Heathers! Featuring two of my 90's favourites, Christian Slater and Winona Ryder fall in love and to get her out of the snobby clique at school they decide to kill the cool kids.
It's twisted but a complete comedy, screaming 80's vibes Ryder plays the intelligent 'different than the rest' teen girl and Slater the dark, mysterious bad boy who we all secretly love but ends up trying to blow the entire school up. I'm including this as one of my valentine favourites because there is a romantic string to the plot, but there's so much more that makes it a not-so-typical romance! Teenage suicide! Don't do it!

Image result for true romance
Am I a little obsessed with Christian Slater? True romance has to be one of my favourite films in general and is perfect for valentines if you don't want just a soppy love story! A lonely boy who loves Elvis & Karate films marries a call girl he just meets, steals cocaine from her pimp and tries to sell it in Hollywood! The mob soon catch their sent and track them down in an attempt to reclaim it!
I feel as if the title of this film doesn't do it justice whilst at the same time summing up completely what the film is. I love the relationship of the two leads (Slater and Patricia Arquette) because it really is a true romance, they fall head over heels for each other and it's so pure, the fun comes later in the film when they get them selves into trouble but still fighting on together! You're so cool, You're so cool, You're so cool.

Image result for like crazy
Like crazy (featuring the late Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones and a cheeky cammy by Jennifer Lawrence) is one for the soppy hearts out there! A British College student falls for a American student, only to be separated from him when she is banned from the U.S for over staying her visa! The film follows on their lives and how they cling on to one another whilst being so far apart to keep their relationship alive.
Like crazy brings a tear to my eye each time not only for the beautiful way of filming, but the heart breaking story line which I don't recommend for the lonely on valentines day. It's an emotional film which shows the real ness of long distance relationships, based roughly on the directors own life! My favourite detail of Like Crazy is a basic outline of the film was made and the actors improvised almost all of the dialog! I thought I understood it, that I could grasp it, but I didn't, not really.

Image result for breakfast at tiffanys
Breakfast at Tiffany's is definitely one for the leisurely valentines, the ones that love to lay in bed eating strawberries on a Sunday morning watching the old classics or cow boy films! Featuring the inspiration Audrey Hepburn, BAT is based in New York, where a socialite becomes interested in a young man who moves into her building! Hepburn brings George Peppard into her world, where he sees the real her.
I love this film because it's such a classic, Holly Golightly was always the woman I wanted to be when I was younger (before I realised being a socialite probably wasn't the best goal in life) and from being a huge Hepburn fan, Breakfast at Tiffany's remains always a favourite of mine. I wouldn't say your typical Valentines film, but perfect for lazy late afternoons if you're wanting a relaxed day! You're afraid to stick out your chin and say, "Okay, life's a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that's the only chance anybody's got for real happiness." You call yourself a free spirit, a "wild thing," and you're terrified somebody's gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself.

Image result for how to lose a guy in 10 days

I had to include one of my favourite Rom-Coms, just because of how hilarious How to lose a guy in 10 days in! Not a chick flick at all because Matthew McConaughey is a complete dude as always! A different kind of love story, an advertising executive and ladies man (McConaughey) bets that he can make a woman fall in love with him in order to win big on a campaign, whilst Kate Hudson's character is assigned to write an article on 'how to lose a guy in ten days', bringing the two characters together one night in a bar! The film keeps me in stitches as both characters go above and beyond to lose and keep each other.
If you haven't already seen this film you absolutely need to ASAP, perfect for a first valentines or even one where you just want a good laugh instead of romance. You're already falling in love with me. I'm going to make you wish you were dead.

Image result for 10 things i hate about you movie clips
Ok, here's one for our 90's lovers and soppy hearts because 10 things I hate about you is the perfect high school in American teen film which has the perfect ending. It all starts with a popular teenager who can't date unless her angry, less popular older sister does! To win the girl from 'popular guy', Joseph Gordon-Levitt pays Heath Ledger's bad boy character to take out the older sister Julia Stiles!
I love this film for the pop culture, it's a typical 90's teen film but with amazing music featured and a GO GIRL attitude! No drinking, no drugs, no kissing, no tattoos, no piercings, *no* ritual animal slaughters of any kind. Oh, God, I'm giving them ideas.

Image result for edward scissorhands
I wanted to throw in something a little different and whilst Edward Scissorhands can be debated both a Halloween AND Christmas film, I'd say the love story is definitely worth a watch on Valentines day! A gentle creature created in an isolated castle has scissors for hands and is brought into the near by community where despite efforts, isn't quite accepted.
Featuring two of my all stars, Depp & Ryder star in this Tim Burton alternative fairy tale! Edward will do anything for Ryders character Kim, which means getting involved with the wrong crowd and fleeing for his life. I think the romance in this film is so precious and definitely worth a watch if you're a fan of Burtons collection. You see, before he came down here, it never snowed. And afterwards, it did.

Image result for eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Last but not least, one perfect for the film lovers who want to get involved with Valentines! Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind feature some pretty big faces (Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kristen Dunst, Elijah Wood, etc) in a film that really makes you think! When a relationship goes sour, a couple under go a procedure to erase each other from their memories! Through the process they rediscover what they had and have to fight their obstacles!
I love this film because not only is the plot line so in depth, but it has a beautiful soundtrack to go with it! It's filmed amazingly and definitely gets the gears moving in your brain as you piece together what is happening in the film. The plot centres around both Carrey and Winslet's relationship so definitely a full blown valentines movie about a relationship, but it's no where near perfect. I could die right now, Clem. I'm just... happy. I've never felt that before. I'm just exactly where I want to be.

I hope you liked my picks! What films will you be watching this Valentines day?

Until next time,
